LASIK Eye Surgery – How It’s Done!

To those wondering how does LASIK work, LASIK is an eye surgery that corrects your vision by reshaping the cornea. To determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure, Dr. Manger and his staff will perform a 14-test exam. If you are a good candidate, Dr. Manger will customize the treatment based on these tests. Dr. Manger makes two dozen decisions for each LASIK eye candidate before operating to ensure the best visual outcome and ensure a safe and successful LASIK procedure.

For many, understanding how LASIK is done can ease any fears about the procedure. Before Dr. Manger begins, our technicians explain what to expect and how LASIK works during the 20-minute procedure and numb the eyes with eye drops. The technician will also be next to you during the entire procedure, walking you through it every step of the way. We also offer Valium to relax you if you happen to be a little nervous.

There are two main lasers Dr. Manger uses during the LASIK procedure. The first is the Intralase laser and is used to create the thin corneal cap, first on the right eye, then the left eye. This laser enables the LASIK procedure to be blade-free. It only takes a few seconds per eye to make the corneal flap. Dr. Manger then folds the thin cap out of the way to use the second laser for the vision correction part of the procedure.

The second laser is the excimer laser and is used to reshape the inner tissue of the cornea. Dr. Manger customizes your treatment based on all the information obtained from your 14-test comprehensive LASIK exam. The excimer laser tracks the motion of your eye over 1000 times per second, so you do not need to worry about moving your eye. The actual treatment time under the laser is usually 10-25 seconds. Dr. Manger then smoothes the corneal flap back into place, and healing begins immediately. No stitches are required.

After a quick follow-up exam the following day, Dr. Manger’s patients are back to driving, exercising, working on the computer, traveling, or other regular activities. 99.7% of Dr. Manger’s patients see 20/20 or better! Schedule an exam with Dr. Manger to see if LASIK can help you too.
