What is YAG Capsulotomy?

During cataract surgery, the cataract was removed and replaced with an intraocular lens, or IOL. The new lens is held in place in what is called the posterior capsule in the eye. Cloudy vision after cataract surgery can occur if this posterior capsule becomes opaque. This can happen as soon as a few months to a few years after the initial cataract surgery. To treat this issue, your doctor will perform a laser treatment called YAG capsulotomy to restore the clear vision.

How does the YAG laser work?

The YAG laser works by delivering small, quick bursts of energy to make a tiny opening in that posterior capsule. Creating this hole allows light to pass through the lens to your retina for clear vision while leaving the posterior capsule intact.

What will happen at my appointment?

The treatment is a quick and painless process allowing you to return to your normal activities quickly. Before the treatment, your eyes will be numbed and dilated with eye drops. Your head will be positioned comfortably on a chin rest in front of the laser for the treatment. You may see a flash of light or hear a clicking sound, but you will not feel any pain. As with any procedure, there are risks so be sure to talk to your doctor to discuss the best option for you. The great news is that once the posterior capsule has been opened with the YAG laser, it will not cause your vision to cloud again.

If after your YAG laser treatment you still find a need for glasses or contacts, you could be a candidate for the LASIK eye surgery with Dr. Manger at Saddleback Eye Center.
