What Are Cataracts?

A cataract occurs when the inner lens of the eye becomes cloudy. Typically, light can pass through the lens to your retina and allow you to have clear vision. As the lens becomes cloudy, less light passes through and can cause blurry vision and make it harder for the eyes to focus. Some may also notice glare while driving, double vision, or frequent changing of glasses prescription.

It is more common in older people because this process usually happens very gradually over time and can occur in one or both eyes.

Cataracts can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Exposure to the sun
  • Aging
  • Past eye infections or injury
  • Family history
  • Some medications, including steroids
  • Diabetes
  • Tobacco use

When should you see your eye doctor?

Annual routine eye exams will help your doctor monitor your vision and check for cataracts. You should see a doctor if you notice any dramatic change in your vision.

When in surgery needed?

Cataracts develop slowly over time, so surgery is not always necessary right away. However, if the cataracts begin to impair your daily activities such as driving or reading, and glasses do not seem to help anymore, it may be time for surgery.

During the cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed and replaced with a clear, artificial lens.

After surgery

Once your eyes are healed, your vision should no longer be blurry after cataracts surgery. In some cases, the capsule that holds the artificial lens can become cloudy over the first few months or years after cataracts surgery. If this happens, a YAG laser can be used to correct this and give you a clearer vision.

If you still find a need for glasses after cataracts surgery, you can consider LASIK eye surgery with Dr. Manger after three months.

Overall, the best way to take care of your eyes is to wear polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and to get routine eye exams regularly.
