Let’s start at the beginning: What is LASIK and how does it work?
LASIK is a vision correction procedure that can correct most amounts of nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and even the need for reading glasses. Dr. Manger uses three different lasers to reshape the cornea to correct these visual problems.
Dr. Manger uses a 3-step process to correct a patient’s vision:
- First, we take a 3D picture of the cornea with “wavefront” or “custom” technology. Wavefront technology allows Dr. Manger to treat many imperfections that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, which helps patients see in “high definition” after their procedure.
- Next, the eye is numbed with drops and the Intralase laser creates a “cap” or “flap” on the surface of the cornea.
- The flap is lifted, and an excimer laser is used to reshape the corneal tissue. After reshaping, the flap is gently placed back into position, and healing begins immediately.
When the LASIK procedure was first being performed in the U.S. in 1996, the “flap” was created by using a microkeratome and a metal blade. While 30-40% of all LASIK procedures performed in the U.S. today will still be done with the metal blade, this technology is considered by most to be outdated and the Intralase laser is the “gold standard” in the industry.
