What is Wavefront (or Custom) LASIK Technology?

Custom Wavefront Lasik is the most advanced laser vision correction procedure available today.  On top of utilizing the best LASIK technology, having a top-caliber surgeon is also a critical factor in the success of the Custom Wavefront Lasik procedure. With the use of state-of-the-art technology, Custom Wavefront Lasik provides surgeons with a 3-D image of the patient’s eye for maximum efficiency. LASIK surgery is a complicated procedure that requires precise technical equipment and the steady hand of a very experienced surgeon. While there are many different tools available to LASIK surgeons, some technologies are far more advanced than others, and using the most advanced technology helps ensure the best surgery results.

At Saddleback Eye Center, Dr. Charles Manger’s 100% blade-free, custom LASIK procedure utilizes only the most advanced technologies available, including Wavefront LASIK technology.

What Is Wavefront LASIK?

Wavefront technology offers LASIK surgeons the most advanced, cutting-edge, and state-of-the-art LASIK procedure available.

Previous to the deployment of Wavefront systems, LASIK was more like a one-size-fits-all approach. Still, with Wavefront, it’s become a truly custom process, with treatments based upon the unique visual characteristics of your eye.

Custom Wavefront Lasik uses an extremely precise laser to measure all the imperfections in your visual path that are unique to your eye(s) only. It takes a “fingerprint” of your eye, and the surgeon then analyzes the data collected to create a 3-D image of your eye. After analyzing and adjusting the data, the surgeon then electronically transmits that image to the laser used in a Wavefront system. The computer then matches your eye’s actual position in space and allows your LASIK surgeon to make much finer-tuned adjustments to correct your specific visual irregularities better.

Benefits of Wavefront Custom LASIK

The quality of your vision is impacted by two different types of problems, refractive errors (technically referred to as “lower-order aberrations”) and visual distortions (called “higher-order aberrations”).

Lower-order aberrations (or refractive errors) cause problems like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, while higher-order aberrations (or visual distortions) cause optical defects like decreased contrast-sensitivity, impaired night vision, excessive glare, shadows, or halos.

Traditional, pre-Wavefront LASIK could only counteract lower-order aberrations, which is why you’ve heard stories of people having difficulty with night-driving or halos even after they had LASIK surgery.

Fortunately, Wavefront LASIK can correct for both of these types of problems, improving the sharpness and clarity of your vision, as well as the quality of your vision (in terms of contrast sensitivity, fine detail, etc.).

Wavefront LASIK helps reduce the potential side effects of traditional LASIK, like night vision problems, excessive glare, etc., resulting in clearer and sharper vision. As an analogy, consider the difference between a regular TV and a high-definition TV. You can see both of them, but you know the picture in the high-definition TV is much clearer and sharper than in the regular TV. Wavefront or Custom LASIK is analogous to high-definition TV.

Suppose you’ve been scared away from having LASIK surgery due to the horror stories about night vision problems, halos, or glare. In that case, you can rest assured that those were almost certainly caused by older, outdated technology.
