New Generation Of “Training” LASIK Surgeons

Contrary to common misconception, the success of LASIK surgery isn’t solely dependent on LASIK technology.  To ensure a successful and safe LASIK surgery, you must know how to pick the right LASIK surgeon who utilizes the most advanced LASIK technology. While LASIK technology is undoubtedly a sophisticated state-of-the-art equipment, your result is only as good as the surgeon you choose. New information is surfacing about how refractive surgeons are getting trained, urging the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences to pave the way to standardize refractive surgery training, facilities, and certification.

Minimal Lasik Surgery Training and Exposure

Currently, there is little to no residency training on refractive surgery. In fact, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education only requires residents to perform or ASSIST in six keratorefractive procedures, which means surgeons essentially do not even have to perform surgery to graduate.

This is why many refractive surgeons who have graduated lately are so poorly trained – since there are no requirements or accreditation requirements. This lack of exposure and experience in refractive surgery for these surgeons is staggering. In fact, a freshly graduated medical student could just go to a few hours of a specialty day and claim to be a refractive surgeon.

Laying the Groundwork on Standardizing LASIK Surgeon Training

The World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences, Visual Freedom Foundation, and globally-renowned eye specialists like Dr. Manger are involved in the movement to help establish a training and credentials standard for LASIK and refractive surgery surgeons.

So, how does one become excellent at something as serious as eye surgery if they rarely ever perform it? This would be a huge red flag and one of a multitude of reasons to only trust your vision to a real LASIK expert, like Dr. Manger! The median number of refractive procedures a resident performs is two. The median number for LASIK and PRK procedures performed by these residents is zero. Dr. Manger has been performing LASIK only for the past 25 years, having done over 94,000 LASIK procedures. Patients come from around the world to have LASIK by Dr. Manger due to his elite level of experience as a leader in the LASIK industry!
