All-Laser LASIK eye surgery
Understanding common vision problems
Nearsightedness
Nearsightedness (Myopia) occurs when the cornea is too curved or the eye
is too long. This causes light to focus in front of the retina, resulting
in blurry distance vision.
Farsightedness
Farsightedness (Hyperopia) occurs when the cornea is too flat in relation
to the length of the eye. This causes light to focus at a point beyond
the retina, resulting in blurry close vision and sometimes blurry distance
vision as well.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is shaped like a football (more curved
in one direction than the other) and often occurs with nearsightedness
or farsightedness. This causes light to focus in more than one point on
the retina, resulting in blurry and distorted vision.Understanding the
LASIK procedure
LASIK, laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is one of the most popular
vision correction procedures because it can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness
and astigmatism for a broad range of prescriptions. LASIK corrects vision
by reshaping the cornea so that light focuses more precisely on the retina.
Today, with the advanced technology of CustomVue, combined with the expertise
of the Dr. Manger, over 99% of his nearsighted patients see 20/25, 20/20
or better!
The LASIK Procedure Step by Step
After your eye has been numbed with eye drop anesthesia, an eyelid speculum
will be positioned to gently hold your eyes open. You will remain awake
and comfortable throughout the procedure. Once the procedure is completed,
you will be given additional eye drops. Your vision will probably be a
little blurry at first, so have someone drive you home and relax for the
rest of the day. Recovery from LASIK is amazingly fast. At Saddleback
Eye Center, you can count on us to be there every step of the way.
Step
1 – Using WaveScan technology, we take a “fingerprint”
of your eye and your entire visual path, which is called a WavePrint map.
This detailed information is evaluated by Dr. Manger and is transferred
into the laser.
Step
2 –Intralase is used to create the corneal flap with the safety
and predictability of a computer-controlled laser beam. Dr. Manger then
folds the flap back to prepare the eye for the Excimer laser.
Step
3 – Using the VISX Star S4 IR Excimer laser, a cool beam of light
gently reshapes the cornea.
Step
4 – Finally, the protective flap that was created in Step Two is
gently placed back in its original position and begins to heal immediately.
What to expect the day of your LASIK procedure
• Plan to spend 2.5 hours with us the day of your scheduled procedure.
• Arrange for a ride home from the procedure, since you should not
drive immediately following All-Laser LASIK. For patients who live outside
Orange County, complimentary hotel accommodations can be arranged through
our office.
• Wear comfortable clothing for the procedure, eat a regular meal
before the appointment and do not drink alcohol.
• Do not wear face makeup or perfume the day of your procedure.
• Soft contact lens wearers need to be out of their contacts for
two days prior to the procedure. Gas permeable/hard contact lens wearers
should be out of their contacts for two weeks prior to their appointment.
• All of our patients are encouraged to wear high quality, polarized
sunglasses following their surgery.
• Recovery from All-Laser LASIK is a relatively quick process compared
to other forms of surgery. However, you need to allow your eyes a good
chance to heal after the procedure, which means you need to follow all
the instructions given to you by Dr. Manger and his staff.
Want your loved ones to be nearby during the procedure? Members of your
family are always welcome to accompany you to our office. They can even
watch your procedure as you undergo All-Laser LASIK if they so desire.
Traveling a long distance to have LASIK? We will provide complimentary
hotel accommodations for the night. A shuttle from the hotel will provide
transportation to and from the office on the day of the procedure.
Are you a LASIK candidate?
Many factors go in to determining whether or not someone can benefit from
LASIK surgery. The only way to truly know is to schedule your comprehensive
VIP LASIK examination, but there are four questions you can ask yourself
before moving forward:
÷ Are you over 18?
÷ Have you had a stable prescription for the past year?
÷ Are you nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism?
÷ Is your goal to see clearly without glasses or contacts?
If you answered yes to all of these questions, your next step will be
to schedule your free VIP examination. At this exam we will perform all
of the necessary tests to determine if you are a good fit for LASIK, and
if LASIK is a good fit for you.
Have you been told you are not a candidate? Thousands of people who previously
could only wear glasses or contacts to correct their vision are now eligible
for LASIK, thanks to the advanced technology of All-Laser LASIK and the
expertise of Dr. Manger. To find out if you are a candidate, schedule

LASIK Technology
Intralase
Since laser vision correction was introduced a decade ago, there
have been steady advances in the safety and precision of LASIK.
The most groundbreaking of these advancements is All-Laser LASIK
technology– it is 100% all-laser, providing patients with
a safe, bladeless approach. Better yet, Intralase allows more people
to reap the benefits of LASIK than ever before, as its precision
allows Dr. Manger to treat even those patients with high prescriptions
or thin corneas!
In traditional LASIK, the first step of the LASIK procedure is performed
with a hand-held metal blade, or microkeratome. Although traditional
LASIK has been an effective procedure, All-Laser LASIK uses a computer-controlled
laser, Intralase, eliminating many of the possible complications
seen with the mechanical device. Because the flap is created with
the precision of a cool beam laser, Dr. Manger is able to precisely
determine the exact depth of your corneal flap for the most accurate
results possible. This advanced technology allows Dr. Manger unprecedented
control and precision during the procedure, and delivers a premium
level of safety to our patients.

VISX Star S4 IR laser
Saddleback Eye Center is committed to offering our patients the
latest in vision correction technology. We only use the VISX®
Star S4 IR laser - the world’s most advanced laser gaining
FDA approval for treating a wider range of prescriptions than any
other laser on the market. The Star S4 has many exclusive features:
Iris Registration – Aligns and adjusts the
laser to compensate for any rotation in the eye that occurs when
a patient lies down during the procedure. This ensures the treatment
aligns with the WavePrint map created during your exam, improving
the precision of the vision correction.
Variable Spot Scanning (VSS) – Produces seven
variable sized treatment beams, allowing our doctors greater flexibility
for faster, smoother treatments.
3D ActiveTrak™ - Automatically tracks the
tiny motions of your eye in all three dimensions, providing additional
control and precision and reducing your worries.
Fourier Algorithm – The Fourier upgrade captures
100% of the available data points on each patient’s eye, providing
unprecedented levels of resolution for a more complete and precise
correction.
